About me
I’m Clayton Hartley
Like many people, I began my journey with audio when I first started playing in bands as a teenager. At college I discovered there was a Tascam Portastudio anyone could borrow—it recorded four separate tracks on to ordinary cassette tape, enabling simple multi-track recording. I later moved on to an eight-track recorder and then computer-based systems. I think my initial motivation was to capture the bands I was playing bass in, but you soon become smitten by the ability to manipulate sound, to make one person sound like many and to play instruments you can’t play (and may have never even seen). You never stop finding new ways to make things sound better. I still record bands, either in the studio or at live events, but I also make music with just me and a room full of machines. I’ve recorded speeches, poetry and a yoga relaxation session. I’ve shot videos of lectures and interviews.
I still play bass a lot, and thanks to running the Candlelight Club for the last 12 years I have also met a lot of talented musicians through the jazz bands who play there, so I can easily source session players.
With clients like the Arkham Hillbilly we have a remote set-up where he records his own voice and acoustic guitar, then sends me those files to spruce up and add bass and drums. Then I’ll send this backing track to other players so they can record guitars, pedal steel, fiddle, accordion or whatever is needed, then email me their recordings to add to the mix. I’ve recorded and edited dialogue for an animated video as well as supplying music for videos and DVDs.
How can I help you?
